Obion County Board of Education
April 13, 2009

Agenda Item: VIII.I.

Consider/Approve Board Relations and Procedures

Preliminary Matters:

At the TSBA Conference, Board members attended a workshop presented by the Director of Schools from Hamilton County addressing Board Relations and Procedures. Although the Board has adopted many policies, there are limited procedures addressing Board Operations. This document compiles procedures to govern specific Board actions. Although many of the procedures are adhered to on a daily basis, these procedures will set precedent for later Boards and Directors.

In addition, this document will bring the Board into full compliance with TCA §49-2-207, which requires local boards of education to compile and publish an official operating policy pamphlet which shall contain, but not be limited to, such procedures as have been established by letter, directive, written or verbal memorandum, custom or tradition and by which schools are managed, operated, or controlled. Such policy pamphlet shall be updated annually. Upon approval, this document will be posted to the Board’s website.

Staff Recommendation:

This document is presented at the request of the Board. Since it governs Board actions, it is left to the discretion of the Board to adopt. However, I know of nothing in this document that the Board does not already adhere to either via Board policy or tradition and would, therefore, recommend its adoption.
